Tanzania’s Richest Man, Billionaire Mohammed Dewji, Kidnapped

Tanzania’s richest man, Mohammed Dewji, who is reportedly worth 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, has been kidnapped, police said on Thursday. Dar es Salaam regional police commissioner Paul Makonda told newsmen that operations were under way to rescue Dewji and arrest the suspects, while he gave no further details. According to unconfirmed media reports, the 43-year-old businessman and former Member of Parliament was kidnapped as he left a hotel gym in the capital. According to Forbes magazine, Dewji owns the METL Group conglomerate, which operates in a wide range of industries including trade, agriculture and financial services among others. Forbes estimates his net worth to be 1.5 billion dollars and says he is Africa’s youngest billionaire.
