European champions England have defeated nine-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nation winners Nigeria on penalties for a place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Super Falcons held the European champions to a goalless draw until 120 minutes after Lauren James got red red-carded for stamping on Alozie.

After 1-0 wins in their first two games, England found their form to thrash China 6-1 on their way to topping their group.
